Welcome Offers

"Is This The End?"

The End Of Cash Welcome Offers?

For as long as players have gambled online, one of the most lucrative aspects of joining a new casino is the prospect of receiving a generous welcome offer. The most generous are Cash Welcome Offers. These days, UKGC regulated Casinos seem relatively close in comparison in terms of game selection, payment methods, and withdrawal times. For someone happy with one casino, there is little drawing them to a rival casino other than a welcome offer. Casinos know this is their strongest selling point. This is why it will be on the front page of every site you visit. However, as time goes on, welcome offers seem to be getting more scarce. Those that do remain appear considerably less generous than those that existed in years before. Is this the end of cash welcome offers?

Whilst welcome offers usually come with a host of strings attached, players still choose to seek them out. With any average offer, you can expect anywhere between 30-50x wagering. With a Free Spin offer don’t be surprised to find yourself looking at a withdrawal cap. What the welcome offers do for players, however, is allow them to extend their playtime. With a 100% match up bonus, a player could reasonably expect their playtime to double on average. Alternatively they could expect to play on a stake slighter higher than they usually would.

How Does a Cash Welcome Offer Work?

The great thing about a bonus offer within the UK is that, by law, a casino bonus must be “non-sticky”. What this means is that should you win a substantial amount of money whilst still playing with your cash, you can withdraw. By withdrawing you cancel the bonus the casino has given you. Naturally, once doing this you will not be offered the same bonus again. Non-sticky bonuses are one of the remaining ways in which the player remains ahead of the casino. If you win, you can return the bonus, and they cannot tie you into wagering unless you enter bonus money. If you lose, you get a “second chance” to try again, provided you’re prepared to attempt to meet the wagering requirements. It seems like a win-win for UK players.

A welcome offer often involves other requirements alongside wagering. There will usually be a minimum and maximum stake whilst playing with bonus funds, and at some casinos not all games will contribute fully towards wagering. The thought process behind this is simple – if a casino were to give a player a £300 match up bonus, and that player were to play an extremely volatile game on an extremely high stake, they could stand to win tens of thousands of pounds. As such, the maximum stake is usually capped at £5, and those sought after games such as Dead or Alive 2 or Lil’ Devil are excluded from wagering contributions at a lot of casinos.

Why Do Requirements Exist?

Bonus requirements frequently anger players, who cannot understand why casinos cannot give better offers to what could be a loyal customer, or what may already be a loyal customer. Players often cannot understand why there should be so many strings attached. However, in the past UK casinos have had to contend with a high level of “bonus abuse” – effectively people who try to find the loopholes in the system to benefit themselves, and profit from a casinos goodwill. Originally, many welcome offers did not have any requirements. This enabled players to sign up, receive a bonus, and cash out. Wagering was the solution and result to this problem. It is worth noting, however, that there is a difference between a player choosing to take a bonus to try to advantage themselves, and entire “bonus abuse rings” existing within the UK, some going as far as fraudulently obtaining identification to continue.

As most players know, legislation within the UK surrounding gambling is constantly evolving. It feels rare to have more than a month go by without hearing another rumour about what the UKGC could be planning to change next. On many levels, these changes anger players, such as the removal of Feature Buys, the prospect of maximum stakes, and the idea of removing turbo spins. However, what players often don’t see, is that the UKGC is consistently changing conditions to be in favour of the player, and is continually protecting the player. Often, casinos can feel as though this leaves them exposed. One example of this is that UK casinos must pay tax on promotional offers, so even if a casino is a victim of fraud by a player, they must pay their fee regardless.

What Does This Mean?

And so, we come to today’s circumstances, where welcome offers are no longer as generous, or as common. Many UK casinos have removed their cash welcome offers altogether, opting instead for a free spin offer. Some of these have stated that they will not be bringing a cash welcome offer back. Cash welcome offers, that do remain, are substantially less lucrative than in years before, with more requirements. Outside of the UK, players are also feeling this effect. Online Casinos in Sweden are also losing a considerable amount of welcome offers available.

Of course, some casinos do still remain with cash welcome offers. On our Casinos page we have:

  • Party Casino (GVC)
  • Novibet (NoviGroup)
  • Casimba (White Hat Gaming)
  • Jackpot Village (White Hat Gaming)
  • Temple Nile (White Hat Gaming)
  • Miami Dice (White Hat Gaming)
  • Leo Vegas (Leo Vegas Gaming)
  • All British (L&L Europe)

We promote each of these because we have sought out casinos which we believe have each of the things that our players want to see. However, since launching our site, we have already seen some of our welcome offers change from cash to free spins. It’s hard to say that we are sure cash welcome offers will still exist a few years from now.

Let us know your thoughts down below. Would a free spins welcome offer still encourage you to sign up to a casino? How would you feel if cash welcome offers were eliminated?
