Stakelogic are getting into the spooky season with their upcoming release, Devil’s Trap. After seeing success from previous releases like Freaky Friday and El Cowboy Megaways, the team are turning their hand to something slightly more simple, in search of good old fashioned Halloween fun. With wins on offer up to 10,000x bet, this highly volatile release comes with a default RTP of 96.26%.
It seems Devil’s Trap takes place in some sort of haunted amusement park or carnival – and really, is there a worse place to be trapped with evil spirits? Probably not. Things are suitably seasonal, with ghosts, spiders, pumpkins, witches hats, and chainsaws all adding to the overall theme. Audios are perfectly fitting with the theme – very classically Halloween, which is a fine choice, but nothing that’s really going to take you by surprise.
Devil’s Trap Base Features
Taking place across 5 reels, wins are formed on Devil’s Trap by matching at least 3 symbols on adjacent reels, beginning with the leftmost reel, across one of 20 fixed win lines. Symbols available begin with non premiums – 10s, Js, Qs, Ks, and As. Land 3 of a kind of any non premium to see wins between 0.50 and 1.25x bet, with these values increasing to between 2 and 8x bet for 5 of a kind. At the premium end we have spiders, snakes, Frankenstein style hands, and ravens – land 3 of a kind of any of these to see wins between 2 and 5x bet. 5 of a kind premium matches are where things come to life – with wins between 10 and 100x bet on offer. Finally, Wild pumpkin symbols are available, awarding wins of 5, 15, and 100x bet for 3, 4, and 5 of a kind matches, respectively. Wilds substitute for all symbols except Bonus symbols – represented by witches hats.
There’s just one feature to talk through in the base game – the Bonus Reel, which is triggered by landing 3 Bonus symbols – available on reels 3, 4, and 5. When the Bonus Reel has been triggered, it will cover the first two reels and begin to spin, with the following prizes on offer:
- An instant win of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, or 200x bet.
- A respin with 3-10 Random Wild symbols landing.
- 10, 15, or 20 Free Spins.
It is not possible to trigger Free Spins any way other than through the Bonus Reel, unless you opt to buy them.
Devil’s Trap Bonus
After triggering Free Spins from the Bonus Reel, players will see a multiplier wheel to the righthand side of the reels. This is the Global Win Multiplier. On every Free Spin, this wheel will spin, and multiply the win of the spin by the value it reveals. Possible multiplier values are Empty, x2, x3, x4, x5, x6, x8, x10, x12, x15, x20, x25, x50, and x100.
Bonus symbols remain on the reels during Free Spins. Landing 3 will trigger the Bonus Reel just like in the base game, with the same prizes on offer:
- An instant win of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, or 200x bet.
- A respin with 3-10 Random Wild symbols landing.
- 10, 15, or 20 additional Free Spins.
During Free Spins, Wild symbols are stacked – either 2 or 3 symbols tall. Wilds are available on all reels, and if they land on the top row or top two rows, there is a chance the Nudging Wild Feature will activate. When this happens, a skeletal hand will pull the Wild symbol down, covering the entire reel.
Players in appropriate regions can opt to go straight into the action through one of three Buy Free Spins options:
- 10 Free Spins – 100x bet
- 15 Free Spins – 250x bet
- 20 Free Spins – 500x bet
- Random Free Spins (50% 10, 30% 15, 20% 20) – 225x bet
The maximum win available in Devil’s Trap is 10,000x bet. If the sum of a single game round exceeds this, the game round will end, and 10,000x bet will be awarded.
First Impression
There isn’t a great deal to say about Devil’s Trap, as is usually the case with a seasonal release. It’s about finding the balance between creating something exciting, but not using too many resources on it, as often they can be forgotten about out of season. It seems Stakelogic have found a good middle ground here – there are a few features to keep things moving forward, including Nudging Wilds which we know are a crowd pleaser, but not so many that it feels overwhelming.
Game play is fine, and the Bonus Reel is a nice addition – although with this being the only way to trigger Free Spins I imagine it would be frustrating to trigger repeatedly without the feature. It would be interesting to know how often this triggers, or the odds of Free Spins occurring from it. Once you do move into Free Spins however, things can be quite exciting – especially with win multipliers up to x100.
Default RTP sits at 96.26%, with a highly volatile maths model and wins on offer up to 10,000x bet, so mathematically there are no complaints from us. If you’re looking for something new to try this Halloween, Devil’s Trap is a simple, relaxing one, in spite of the theme.
