As recently as August 2021, Microgaming partner Alchemy Gaming released Africa X UP, which offered players the opportunity to progress along a win multiplier ladder before triggering free spins, with multipliers as high as x25 available. Symbols payouts begin at the lower end, with 10, J, Q, K and As paying between 0.17 and and 0.50x bet for 3 of a kind matches, increasing to values between 1 and 1.67x bet for 5 of a kind matches. At the premium end, 5 greek gods reward players with wins between 0.6 and 1.17x bet for 3 of a kind matches, whilst landing 5 of a kind matches offer payouts between 2.33 and 4x bet.

5 of a kind wild symbols award wins of 4.17x bet, whilst also expanding to fill the reel they land on, substituting for all symbols except Scatters – easily distinguishable as X UP symbols, and paying 2x bet for 3 of a kind in any position.

To the left of the reels, a meter is in view – the X UP meter. Landing 2 X UP Scatter symbols will award an X UP token, which fills one of the 23 positions on the meter. As more positions are filled, players progress through the 8 levels available on the meter, unlocking multipliers along the way, which come into play during free spins. Scatters can appear on reels 2, 3 or 4 in the base game.

When 3 X UP Scatter symbols land and free spins are triggered, the current highest unlocked multiplier will be awarded as a win multiplier for the duration of free spins. Multipliers available are: x2, x3, x4, x5, x7, x10, x25, and x50.

Landing 3 X UP Scatter symbols triggers 8 free spins. The win multiplier awarded for the duration of free spins will be determined by how far up the multiplier X UP meter players have progressed.

During free spins, Scatters can land on reels 2 and 4, and landing 2 in view awards an additional +2 free spins, whilst continuing to advance players along the multiplier ladder. This offers the chance of upgrading the active win multiplier. The collection meter stays filled to the triggering level to begin free spins. If free spins have triggered at the highest available multiplier of x50, it is not possible to collect additional X UP tokens but Scatters may still land for extra free spins.

Once free spins are completed, the collection meter resets, but any progress on other stakes that have not triggered yet will remain.

With the Upsizer Feature, players have the chance to activate a higher free spins multiplier for a calculated cost upon triggering free spins. Collected X UP tokens reduce the cost of available free spin multipliers.

First Impression

Chronicles of Olympus X UP does a good job of continuing what began in Africa X UP – although the differences are subtle, there has certainly been an upgrade, with a win multiplier as high as x50 available (previously x25), and wins up to 50,000x bet on offer (previously 30,000x bet). Changes have been made to the way the feature buy plays out also (for those in appropriate regions), with a set cost and a random multiplier awarded now. This helps to keep things exciting, and will certainly be rewarding for players lucky enough to land a x50 multiplier from the 100x bet cost.

What has remained is the same overall experience – again not unlike a Heartstopper feature, especially when we consider that upon reaching the highest available multiplier free spins are automatically triggered. When in free spins, we also have the opportunity to continue to build the win multiplier, whilst triggering additional free spins at the same time. This means, regardless of the beginning multiplier, we could reach the highest available heights in any bonus round.

With expanding wilds, 243 ways to win, and a default RTP of 96.33% (other settings are available), Chronicles of Olympus X UP has enough to offer players to peak our interest – especially when considering the maximum available win of 50,000x bet, making this a great follow on to Africa X UP.
