When you Google “Devil’s Fingers”, the main thing that comes up is the iconic rock ‘n’ roll symbol – the sign of the horns. Something that universally symbolises grit, edge, and determination. 

Ironic, considering that the main protagonist of Shady Lady’s debut 6×4 slot, Devil’s Fingers, is Cosmo.

With his blue box-dyed hair, he’s your stereotypical, basement-dwelling nerd, fuelled by energy drinks, chronically online, and probably partial to a bit of LARPing (Live Action Roleplaying, if you didn’t know), if the medieval axe in his bedroom is anything to go by. Courage and strength, he is not. 

Still, this game sees Cosmo transform into an unlikely hero as he must tackle the very literal demons under his bed, utilising the magical powers of a Mountain Dew dupe to cast spells and banish those porky devils to whatever fiery pit they crawled out of.

Cosmo’s bedroom serves as the backdrop for the action, littered with your standard nerdy fare and gamer paraphernalia.

In a turn of events, though, the grid itself is framed within an iron maiden. Cosmo can be seen in his hideaway on reel one, where the devil lurks on reel six –  this is important to know for later.

Devil’s Finger immediately set the tone for all the Shady Lady releases that followed, combining irreverent humour with (literal) close-to-the-bone limit-stretching – a formula seen in later titles Laced, Swoll, and Black Friday.

With a fairly innovative set of mechanics on show, the base game provides some devilishly fun action, with 4,096 ways to win and several modifiers to keep the action running smoothly, like Win Multipliers, Wilds, and Blockers.

Win spins are achieved by landing three or more matching symbols across adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel, on any of the game’s initial 4,096 win ways. 

Nine regular symbols have been included, consisting of possessed kings, nuns, knights, and commoners for the high-paying ones, paying up to 2x for six matching symbols. The low-paying symbols are five various arcane symbols hand-carved into pieces of wood.

Outside of the regular symbols, Wilds are also included, substituting for any regular paying symbol, in the form of a winged black cat.

Cosmo Feature

When the Cosmo symbol lands on the first reel without the Devil appearing on the last reel, Cosmo blows his summoning horn to place between one and five Dragon Wilds on the grid, which substitute for any paying symbol. 

Devil Feature

The Devil Feature represents the opposite of Cosmo’s power, and can be activated in the base game and Free Spins bonus round. 

If the Devil symbol lands on reel six without Cosmo appearing on reel six, a respin is triggered.

During this re-spin, the two locked rows open at the top and bottom of the grid, and each finger moves up a random number, between zero and four steps, as the column multipliers upgrade +1 per covered row.

As the titular Devil’s Fingers move up the reels during play, either in the Devil Feature or Free Spins, the column multipliers above that reel increase at the same time.

Symbols hidden under the fingers cannot form winning combinations, acting as a blocker. 

When a finger moves up, its column multiplier increases. One row is the same as x2, two rows is x3, etc.

These multipliers are applied to any and all winning ways that pass through their respective columns, and only reset once the spin has ended.

The Devil’s Fingers Free Spins round is activated when Cosmo lands on reel one and the Devil lands on reel six. This gives seven free spins right off the back, with the reels expanding to offer up to 10,000x ways to win.

After the first spin, a random finger moves up one step on the grid, increasing the corresponding multiplier by one.

During the free spins round, spellbottles (that look suspiciously like a certain energy drink) may appear on the leftmost and rightmost reels, each awarding Cosmo one spell:

Shady Lady wasted no time making an entrance. In their debut year packed with weird, satirical, and unapologetically on-the-nose themes, the studio cannonballed straight into the deep end with Devil’s Finger.

From the outset, this game established Shady Lady’s obvious gamer roots, in Cosmo himself, the mechanical ingenuity of spellcasting modifiers dressed as energy drinks, and the Loot Boxes feature buy option that all feel like a deliberate nod to modern-day gamer culture. 

The theming itself is also wonderfully impish and immediately memorable. Before you’ve even placed a bet, you’ll spot tiny devil’s backside wiggling at you from the bottom of the grid. 

With 4,096 ways to win, the base setup offers strong combination potential, but those pesky fingers from the Devil Feature are cruel masters. They can give and take in equal measure, boosting win multipliers while also restricting winning ways as they expand.

The Free Spins bonus is where the heat is definitely cranked up, opening up the gates to hell for more win ways and giving Cosmo the chance to fight back, increasing multipliers, removing blockers, and adding more free spins to extend the round.

With Boosters and Feature Buy options included, Devil’s Finger possesses more than enough depth to keep entertainment value at a premium cost, and with a hefty 20,000x bet max win potential, the rewards of locking oneself inside an iron maiden become strangely appealing.
