Triple Edge Studios have teamed up with Microgaming once again to bring us their newest release, Poseidon Ancient Fortunes Megaways – an action packed adventure sequel to the Ancient Fortunes series. Choosing to use Big Time Gaming‘s most popular mechanic, Megaways, is an interesting approach as so often players will give any new release a chance once they see those respected 8 golden letters. Visually, Triple Edge Studio is taking us underwater, with clear blue waters, teal reels, 4 impressive jackpots, and a glowing chest at the bottom left. RTP is a fair 95.98%, with wins of over 10,000x available, and medium volatility levels, giving the potential to be an enjoyable experience for players of all stakes.
Poseidon Ancient Fortunes Megaways Base Features
Taking place across 6 reels, with an additional horizontal reel at the top of reels 2-5, Poseidon Ancient Fortunes adopts the Megaways mechanic, allowing between 2 and 6 symbols to land on each reel for up to 117,649 ways to win. Continuing with their Rolling Reels™, winning symbols are removed from the board, allowing new symbols to drop in their place to form new wins.
Symbols adopt the theme well, with no standard royal symbols in play, and instead an array of underwater characters making up the pay table, with pays beginning at 3 of a kind. At the lower end, shells, crabs, dolphins, bulls, horses and octopuses reward players anywhere between 0.8 and 1.8x bet for landing 6 of a kind. Green, blue and red gems award between 2 and 7.5x bet, again for 6 of a kind. Poseidon is our premium symbol, paying for 2 of a kind, and coming in at an impressive 50x bet if you manage 6 of a kind. Finally, wild symbols substitute all symbols except scatters, only appearing on the extra, top reel.
Wild symbols also factor into the jackpot feature on the left hand side of the game. As wild symbols land across the top reel, they are collected in the chest at the bottom left of the screen, and once all cascades have finished, there is a chance to trigger the jackpot round, where players can win one of 4 jackpots:
- Mini Jackpot: 15x bet
- Minor Jackpot: 50x bet
- Major Jackpot: 100x bet
- Mega Jackpot: 5,000x bet
The jackpot round plays out much like a standard picking bonus, with 12 facedown tokens in view. Players continue picking tokens, until they match 3 of a kind, wherein the associated jackpot will be awarded. The more wild tokens collected in the chest, the higher the chance of triggering the jackpot round.
Poseidon Ancient Fortunes Megaways Bonus
Landing G, O, L and D scatter symbols awards 12 free spins, with +5 scatters also available, awarding 5 extra spins for each in view. Free Spins work alongside an incrementing multiplier, beginning at x1, and increasing by 1 for every Rolling Reels win. Scatter symbols can land along the top reel during free spins. Landing 3 or 4 scatter symbols awards an extra 5 or 10 spins, respectively. Jackpots can be won in free spins alongside the base game, so wild symbols that land during free spins continue to be collected.
Poseidon Ancient Fortunes Megaways makes good use of what is provided, and as expected maintains a level of excitement given the Megaways mechanic in use. The theme is well executed, and will inevitably be well received by fans of similar releases. Whilst the base game is not well set apart from other Megaways editions available, the addition of jackpots adds a nice touch. Many players enjoy chasing those life changing amounts that Progressive Jackpots such as Mega Moolah offer, but many others prefer lower, more “achievable” jackpots, and with the Mega sitting at 5,000x, it feels achievable enough to warrant a grind from time to time.
On the free spins side of things, the setup is fairly standard. 12 free spins with an multiplier incrementing by x1 for each win is exactly what we expect from Megaways, however we’ve seen before that those 12 free spins can deliver the wins promised in this slot: already there have been several wins over 10,000x. RTP is standard at 95.98%, however the only real rush of adrenaline lies within the highest available symbol, unless the progressive multiplier is in play. As an added plus, volatility sits on the medium side, so players who love a Megaways slot, particularly with jackpot excitement, yet prefer not to verge towards high/extreme volatility may find joy within this release.
