Developer Relax Gaming are one of the more well known providers available today – with a plethora of impressive releases under their belt, leading to a reputation that evokes excitement from players when any new release is coming, even before information has been released. Thankfully, the wait for their next release is nearly over, and it won’t be long before players get to try their hand at Hex – a highly (5/5) volatile release with wins on offer up to 25,000x bet, topped off with a generous RTP of 96.43% (96.58% feature buy). Let’s take a closer look at this mysterious release, and see what it has to offer.
The team haven’t overcomplicated the graphics on this one – instead, it matches well with the overall feel of the game. Things take place inside some kind of office, presumably belonging to the Sorceress we see on the reels. Potion bottles and candles line the sides, whilst reels themselves are a solid wood so as not to be too distracting, and tie in well. Symbols available are easily discernible (a common criticism of other releases on the market), with clear distinction between non premiums and premiums. Audios are suitably magical, fitting well, with an added bonus that its the kind of music that doesn’t start to grate on you after 50 spins.
Hex Base Features
Taking place across 5×3 reels, wins are formed on Hex by matching at least 3 symbols on consecutive reels, beginning with the leftmost reel, for a total of 243 ways to win. Symbols available begin at the lower end, with 5 potion bottles of various shapes and colours – blue and green award values between 0.20 and 0.50x bet for wins between 3 and 5 of a kind, whilst pink and orange award values between 0.20 and 0.80x bet, also for wins between 3 and 5 of a kind. Red potions are the highest paying non premium, paying 0.30x bet for 3 of a kind, up to 1.20x bet for 5 of a kind. At the premium end, sorceress-like symbols complete the line up, with a blue claw and green set of tarot cards awarding values between 0.50 and 2x bet for wins between 3 and 5 of kind, followed by a purple serpent awarding values between 0.80 and 3x bet, again for wins between 3 and 5 of a kind. Orange voodoo dolls are next, paying 1.20x bet for 3 of a kind, up to 5x bet for 5 of a kind. Next is a red rose covered ram’s head, awarding 2x bet for 3 of a kind, up to an impressive 10x bet for 5 of a kind. Finally, Wilds are available – paying 20x bet for 5 of a kind.
Hex is a very simple release, with only one feature making up the bulk of the excitement – the Mystery Reveal. Sorceress symbols can land on reel 5, and may be silver or gold in colour. During every spin, random symbols on the reels will be framed with a pale blue glow, and landing the Sorceress symbol activates this.
Land a silver Sorceress symbol on reel 5 and every framed symbol on the reels will transform into the same randomly selected paying symbol. Land a gold Sorceress symbol on reel 5, and every framed symbol on the reels will transform into a Wild.
Hex Bonus
Land 3, 4 or 5 Scatter symbols to trigger 7, 10 or 15 free spins, respectively. Before free spins begin, the reel area will expand – still 5 symbols wide, but now 4 symbols tall. Wins continue to be formed by matching at least 3 symbols on consecutive reels, beginning with the leftmost, for 1,024 ways to win.
During free spins, things continue much the same way as the base game, with random symbol positions framed with a blue highlight. However, in free spins, marked positions that are activated remain marked for the duration of spins, allowing for the reel area to progressively fill with these positions throughout the bonus round. Sorceress symbols will also leave behind a frame.
Silver and Gold Sorceress symbols continue to reveal random pay symbols or Wild symbols, respectively. Any additional Scatter symbols that land on the reels during free spins award +1 free spin each.
Players in appropriate regions can fast track to the bonus by buying free spins for a cost of 100x bet. Doing so increases RTP slightly to 96.58%.
The maximum win available is 25,000x bet – if any single game round exceeds 25,000x bet, the round will end and 25,000x bet will be awarded.
First Impression
Relax Gaming have always been a provider capable of producing simple games, that pack an unexpected punch with potential, and Hex is no different. At first glance, with really just one feature on offer, it would be easy to ask ‘where could the big wins be’, but once you’ve played through some spins it quickly becomes apparent exactly what makes this game capable of producing such impressive results – all topped off by the standard of audiovisuals we expect from the studio, a highly (5/5) volatile math model, and an RTP of 96.43%.
The golden Sorceress symbol is really where the action is at – particularly during free spins when more and more symbols are highlighted each spin, along with more ways to win available. From our experience in testing, this didn’t feel too rare, which is good news. However, even whilst waiting for this symbol, the silver Sorceress can still throw decent wins out, with the obvious hope for higher paying symbols to be revealed.
Hex has remnants of Top Dawg$ about it – uncomplicated, effortless, but enthralling, highly volatile and capable of potent combinations – in this case, up to 25,000x bet. Overall, a good addition to the Relax Catalogue, balancing the chaotic stylings they have on offer in releases like Cluster Tumble to continue to provide something for everyone.
