Our second slot review of 2023, and our second book game – this mechanic shows no sign of stopping this year, and provider Quickspin are firmly committed to making the most of it, which brings us to their upcoming release, Book of Inferno. Here’s what we know – in this release we join Anna the Explorer as she heads into the abyss of darkness, channelling her inner demon huntress along the way. The aim? To tackle a trio of demons who are attempting to cross over into our realm, to take over our world and end life as we know it. Thankfully, Anna is guided by the Book of Inferno to help track down her targets – the Lord of Hell, the Lady of Hell, and the Commander of Hell. With wins available up to 5,846x bet, this highly (5) volatile release comes with RTP options between 94.19% – 96.15%.
When you’re taking on three demons from Hell, you know things are going to be dark. Quickspin are some of the best on the market for their graphics and animations, and Book of Inferno is no different. There’s something really captivating about this one, with swirling lakes of fire, pentagrams, frightening demons, and a heroine on hand to save the day. There isn’t much else to say other than ‘the whole thing is fiery’ – even the dark skies above the reels. There’s nothing friendly about it, but it is inviting in a fearful kind of way, all finished off with a hardcore, grimy soundtrack.
Book of Inferno Base Features
Taking place across 5 reels, wins are formed on Book of Inferno by matching at least 2 or 3 symbols on adjacent reels, beginning with the leftmost reel, across 1 of 10 fixed win lines. Symbols available begin with non premiums, with 9s, 10s, Js, Qs, Ks, and As, awarding wins of 0.50x bet for 3 of a kind, increasing to values between 8 and 12x bet for 5 of a kind. Premium symbols pay for a minimum of 2 of a kind, beginning with the Commander of Hell and Lady of Hell, awarding wins of 0.50x bet for 2 of a kind, increasing to win values of 75x bet for 5 of a kind. Next up is the Lord of Hell, awarding wins between 1 and 160x bet for matches between 2 and 5 of a kind, followed by Anna the Demon Huntress – our heroine. Land 2, 3 4, or 5 of a kind Anna symbols to see wins of 1, 10, 100, or 500x bet, respectively. Finally, the Book of Inferno symbol acts as both the Bonus symbol and the Wild, substituting for all symbols and awarding wins of 1, 10, 100, or 500x bet for 2, 3, 4, or 5 of a kind, respectively.
Quickspin aren’t a provider to overload their games, and Book of Inferno is no different, with only one main feature acting as the driving force – Marked symbols. On any spin, a pentagram may appear at random, revealing the Book of Inferno Bonus symbol.
The book will flip to reveal one regular paying symbol – 9, 10, J, Q, K, A, Commander of Hell, Lady of Hell, Lord of Hell, or Anna the Demon Huntress. This symbol will become the Marked symbol. On the spin that follows, if enough of the Marked symbol land on the reels, they will expand to fully cover the reel they have landed upon, after normal wins are calculated. For non premiums, 3 are required to land in view, whilst 2 premiums must be in view. After symbols expand to cover all positions, they pay across all win lines for however many have landed in view, regardless of their position across the 5 reels.
If a Book symbol lands during a spin with a Marked symbol active, it will upgrade the Marked symbol by one step, and expand all instances of the upgraded symbol, should enough land in view. This means if 9s are your marked symbol and you land 3 9s along with a Book, all 9s will be transformed into 10s, and will then expand along with any 10s already present on the reels.
By landing 2 Books in this spin the Marked symbol would be upgraded twice. In the example above, all 10s would then transform to Js before expanding, and would expand along with any Js already present on the reels. If any more than 2 Books were to land in view, Free Spins would be triggered.
If the Marked symbol is upgraded past the highest symbol, all instances of the lowest symbol (9s) are upgraded and converted into the highest symbol (Anna the Demon Huntress).
Book of Inferno Bonus
Land 3 or more Books to trigger Free Spins:
- 3 Books – 10 Free Spins with a 2x bet win
- 4 Books – 15 Free Spins with a 20x bet win
- 5 Books – 25 Free Spins with a 200x bet win
During Free Spins, landing Books will award the same number of additional Free Spins as they do when they trigger the feature. At the beginning of Free Spins, a random symbol is chosen to act as the Marked symbol.
Everything continues as normal during Free Spins, with Marked symbols expanding to cover all win lines if enough of them land in view. To recap, this is 2 premium symbols and 3 non premium symbols. Just like in the base game, if a Book symbol lands during Free Spins, it will upgrade the Marked symbol by one step, expanding all instances of the upgraded Marked symbol, along with any instances of the symbol it was upgraded to.
Again, if the Marked symbol is upgraded past the highest symbol, all instances of the lowest symbol (9s) are upgraded and converted into the highest symbol (Anna the Demon Huntress).
Players in appropriate regions can take advantage of the Bonus Buy option for a cost of 125x bet. After buying the bonus, a random number of Bonus symbols will land to trigger Free Spins – this can be 3, 4, or 5 Books. The frequency of landing 3, 4, or 5 Books is the same as it would be when triggering Free Spins by chance.
The maximum win available in Book of Inferno is 5,846x bet. If the sum of a single game round exceeds this, the game round will end and 5,846x bet will be awarded.
First Impression
Quickspin releases are often a breath of fresh air in this industry – simple yet potent, like their recent release, Raven Rising. This team do their best work when they choose one feature or mechanic and run with it, and Book of Inferno is a great example of this. No bells and whistles, just a solid maths model and superb audiovisuals to carry it to success.
With that in mind, there isn’t a great deal to say on this one that we haven’t already said. Book of Inferno is, at its core, just a book game, but the upgrading feature is what takes it to a higher level than we’ve seen in previous ‘book of’ releases. In particular this offers an improvement during Free Spins, especially if you’re lucky enough to land 2 Books, already beginning with a premium symbol – that’s where things can really take off. When the right combinations land, wins are possible up to 5,846x bet. Not the highest win cap on the market, but certainly nothing to be sniffed at. During testing our best win was 4 of a kind Lord of Hell symbols expanded for 300x bet, but it’s clear how this one can go much further.
Finally, maths is highly (5) volatile and RTP options are available between 94.19% – 96.15%, so as always it’s worth checking this. If you’ve been looking for a darker twist on one of the most established concepts out there, look no further than Book of Inferno.
