Odin – God of War, King of Asgard, Ruler of Valhalla, Anthony Hopkins. However you describe him, you know him. Now, Pragmatic Play are putting this knowledge to good use as they bring us Fury of Odin Megaways – which upon first glance, looks like a follow on from Power of Thor Megaways, the 2021 release from the team which focused on Odin’s son, Thor – obviously. With wins available up to 15,000x bet, this highly (5/5) volatile release comes with two RTP options – 95.07% and 95.97%. Let’s take a closer look and see if this one is worth losing an eye over.

Visually, everything is bright, with clear blue skies, and green grass in the background. Odin stands to the right of the reels, which are encased in steel with golden details. No huge changes have been made comparatively to Power of Thor, but for some reason this one just isn’t quite as striking. That said, audios are a job well done, bringing everything together in quite a triumphant way.

Taking place across 6 reels, wins are formed on Fury of Odin Megaways by matching at least 2 or 3 symbols in any position on adjacent reels, beginning with the leftmost reel. Each reel can hold a maximum of 7 symbols (including the top row on reels 2-5), producing up to 117,649 ways to win. Symbols available begin with non premiums, with 9s, 10s, Js, Qs, Ks, and As, awarding wins between 0.10 and 0.20x bet for 3 of a kind, increasing to values between 0.40 and 1.50x bet for 6 of a kind. At the premium end, we meet three characters, whom I assume are Gods – pink, green, and blue in colour. Land 3 of a kind of any of these premiums to see wins between 0.25 and 0.50x bet, increasing to values between 2 and 3x bet for 6 of a kind. Rounding off the regular pay symbols is Odin himself, who is the only character to pay for 2 of a kind. Land 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 Odins to see wins of 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10x bet, respectively. Finally, golden Wilds are available, substituting for all symbols except Scatters and Fury symbols. Wild symbols can only appear on the top row, above reels 2-5.

Alright, the first thing to cover in Fury of Odin Megaways is the Ante Bet. By betting an additional 25%, the chance of triggering Free Spins naturally is higher, as more Scatters are present on the reels. It is not made clear just how much higher this chance is – just that the chance is indeed higher. RTP increases slightly to 96.02% when Ante Bet is activated (based upon the RTP setting of 95.97%), symbol payouts are unaffected, and the Buy Free Spins option is disabled.

Next up is the Tumble feature. On every spin, all symbols involved in a win will be removed from the reels after wins are paid, with remaining symbols dropping to the bottommost position on their respective reels. When all symbols have dropped down, new symbols will drop in from above to fill the remaining gaps. On the top row, symbols will move in from the right. New symbols will be the same size as those they replace, maintaining the ways to win, and Tumbles continue until no more wins are formed.

Perhaps the main feature of Fury of Odin Megaways is the Fury symbol. These can land on the top row, above reels 2-5. When a Fury symbol lands, either in a normal spin or as a result of Tumbles, all symbols on the reels below it will be transformed into Wilds. This will be displayed as a multiplier Wild Reel – if 3 symbols are transformed into Wilds, a x3 Wild will be displayed, and so on. If, as the result of a Tumble, the Fury symbol moves to a new position on the top row, all symbols on the row below it will once again be transformed into Wilds.

If the symbols on the reel below the Fury symbol that have been transformed into Wilds do not connect in a win, all symbols on all reels will respin, with the exception of the Wilds. Respins continue until at least one winning combination is formed with the Wilds. After each respin, the multiplier displayed on the Wild Reel will be increased by +x1, up to a maximum of x6. The following ways to win are guaranteed with respins:

• Respin 1 – minimum 500 ways to win.
• Respin 2 – minimum 1,000 ways to win.
• Respin 3 – minimum 2,000 ways to win.
• Respin 4 – minimum 5,000 ways to win.
• Respin 5 – minimum 10,000 ways to win.
• Respin 6 – minimum 50,000 ways to win.
• Respin 7+ – minimum 117,649 ways to win.

Additionally, Mystery symbols can land on any reel, in any position. When Mystery symbols land in view, they will all reveal the same paying symbol before wins are calculated.

Finally for the base game, there is a Max Ways Guaranteed Win feature. On any spin that results in no win, it is possible that all symbols will change into a new configuration, guaranteeing a win of 10x bet. This will happen randomly, and when it does the maximum ways to win of 117,649 will be active.

Land 4 Scatters spelling ODIN to trigger 10 Free Spins, with each +2 Scatter after the first four awarding an additional +2 spins. During Free Spins, a win multiplier is active, starting at x1. For each Tumble that occurs, this win multiplier is incremented by +x1.

The Fury symbol can continue to land during Free Spins, and behaves the same way it does in the base game. To recap, the Fury symbol can land on the top row, above reels 2-5. When a Fury symbol lands, either in a normal spin or as a result of Tumbles, all symbols on the reels below it will be transformed into Wilds. This will be displayed as a multiplier Wild Reel – if 3 symbols are transformed into Wilds, a x3 Wild will be displayed, and so on. If, as the result of a Tumble, the Fury symbol moves to a new position on the top row, all symbols on the row below it will once again be transformed into Wilds. If these Wilds do not trigger a win, respins are awarded until a connecting win with the Wilds has been made, with ways to win increasing during each respin.

Each Scatter that lands during Free Spins will award an additional +2 spins.

Players in appropriate regions can take advantage of the Buy Free Spins option. For a cost of 100x bet, either 3, 4, 5, or 6 Scatters will land randomly. RTP increases slightly to 95.99% when buying Free Spins, based upon the RTP setting of 95.97%.

The maximum win available in Fury of Odin Megaways is 15,000x bet. If the sum of a single game round exceeds this, the game round will end and 15,000x bet will be awarded.

First Impression

If there’s one provider that has made good use of the Megaways mechanic, it’s Pragmatic. As a result, we do see some repeated themes and features, including in their recent Old Gold Miner Megaways. Fury of Odin isn’t completely original, but it offers enough tweaks to keep things interesting, and feeling pretty fresh.

There’s plenty to keep the base game moving forward, including Mystery Symbols and up to 117,649 ways to win, but Fury symbols are where the magic can really happen, especially with respins and increasing ways eventually guaranteeing a win. When the right combinations happen, wins are possible up to 15,000x bet (although the in-game information has this listed as 12,000x bet – a frequent issue with Pragmatic releases lately).

Maths is highly (5/5) volatile and RTP sits on the cusp of being comfortable, at 95.97%, however a lower version of 95.07% is available, so as always it’s worth checking this. There isn’t a great deal else to say about Fury of Odin – solid game play, features that have stood the test of time, and a great standard of audiovisual. It maybe doesn’t stand out quite as much as Power of Thor (noticeably, the gamble wheel is missing), but it does the job and takes its’ place – especially for fans of Megaways.
