I’m running out of intros for Pragmatic Play releases – that’s how many there are. Back again today with another, and this time it’s less of a step forwards for the team, and more of a leap to the side, as we take on Old Gold Miner Megaways – which fans of Madame Destiny Megaways will immediately recognise. This one is highly volatile, with an RTP of 96.56% at its’ highest, and wins available up to 5,000x bet.
Visually we’re underground – exactly where you’d expect to be in a release titled Old Gold Miner Megaways. Everything is fairly dark, lit only by lanterns to the sides of the reels. Symbols keep everything on track, with lanterns, tools including shovels and axes, and golden nuggets. For a sidekick, we have a lovely dog and then, taking an odder turn, a lilac mole – bit of a weird choice, but I guess it still works. Audios are upbeat, a bit like what would play if the mole was sneaking in to steal the gold, but sure…
Old Gold Miner Megaways Base Features
Taking place across 6 reels, wins are formed on Old Gold Miner Megaways by matching at least 3 symbols on adjacent reels, beginning with the leftmost reel. Up to 7 symbols can land on reels 1 and 6, whilst reels 2-5 can hold 8 symbols, producing a total of 200,704 ways to win. Symbols begin with non premiums, with 10s, Js, Qs, Ks, and As, awarding wins between 0.10 and 0.20x bet for 3 of a kind, increasing to values between 1 and 1.25x bet for 6 of a kind. At the premium end, we have the aforementioned tools, lanterns, carts filled with gold, and dogs. Land 3 of a kind of any of these to see wins between 0.20 and 1x bet, increasing to values between 1.25 and 3.75x bet for 6 of a kind. Moles are the highest paying symbol available, paying for 2 ways, and awarding wins of 1, 2, 4, 10, and 20x bet for 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of a kind, respectively. Finally, Wild symbols are available, substituting for all symbols except Scatters.
Okay, so first up to cover, it’s Tumbles. On every spin, all symbols involved in a win will be removed from the reels, with all symbols not involved in a win dropping down to the lowest position available on their respective reels. Symbols along the top reel will move in from the right hand side during this process. Once all symbols have dropped down, new symbols will drop down to fill the remaining gaps, giving the chance for more wins to be formed. During Tumbles, new symbols will be the same size as those they replace, to maintain the ways to win. Tumbles continue until no more wins are formed.
Next is the Ante Bet. By betting an additional 25%, the chance of landing Free Spins naturally is doubled, as more Scatters are present on the reels. RTP increases slightly, from 96.56% to 96.67%, when Ante Bet is activated.
That’s pretty much it for the base game, with the exception of the Wild symbols. As we mentioned above, Wilds are available, and substitute for all symbols except Scatters. Wilds can only land on reels 2-6, but when they do land, they multiply all wins they are involved in by x2.
Old Gold Miner Megaways Bonus
Land 3, 4, 5, or 6 golden nugget Scatters to trigger Free Spins with trigger wins of 5, 10, 20, or 100x bet, respectively. Before Free Spins begin, players must spin the Wheel of Fortune, which has two slices – one to award a number of spins, and one to award a win multiplier. Possible spin values are 5, 8, 10, or 12, and possible multiplier values are 2x, 5x, 8x, 10x, 15x, 20x, and 25x.
During Free Spins, the initially awarded multiplier will stick for the duration of spins, and does not increment with Tumbles. Apart from this, everything continues the same, with Tumbles, Wilds acting with multipliers of x2 when involved with wins, and up to 200,704 ways to win.
Land 3, 4, 5, or 6 Scatters to retrigger Free Spins with retrigger wins of 5, 10, 20, or 100x bet, respectively. When the feature has been retriggered, players will spin the Wheel of Fortune again, which will award another number of spins, and another win multiplier – with the same values on the wheel as before Free Spins begin. The awarded values are then added to those already active. There is no limit to the number of re-triggers possible.
Players in appropriate regions can fast-track the action with the Buy Free Spins option. For a cost of 100x bet, 3, 4, 5, or 6 Scatters are randomly guaranteed. This is not possible when the Ante Bet is activated. Just like with the Ante Bet, RTP increases slightly, from 96.56% to 96.67%, when buying Free Spins.
The maximum win available in Old Gold Miner Megaways is 5,000x bet. If the sum of a single game round exceeds this, the game round will end, and 5,000x bet will be awarded.
First Impression
It’s starting to feel a bit like Groundhog Day. Really, it feels like I’m spending a large amount of time reviewing games that look the same, but the features are different, or they look different, but the features are unchanged. In this case, it’s the latter. Look, I don’t judge anyone for it – and ‘re-skins’ as they’re so often called certainly can be popular. If you’ve got something that works, capitalise on it. Still, it kind of feels like I should be able to say here ‘this is Madame Destiny Megaways, so whatever your opinion on that, that will be your opinion on this.’
Okay, that’s maybe a bit harsh, because in terms of how it looks, things are definitely different – with the exception of the thumbnail images, where the miner is gathered over the gold nugget like the psychic over the crystal ball for some reason. Graphics are nice, and I like the addition of the dog, although I still don’t really understand the purple mole. The bonus is, as expected, where most of the action is, with unlimited re-triggers and multipliers – that is, until you reach the max win, which in this case is 5,000x bet.
Maths is highly volatile, and RTP at its highest is 96.56%, although lower versions are available, so as always it’s worth checking. That’s really all there is to say on this. If you liked Madame Destiny Megaways, you’ll love this one. If you didn’t, but you have a penchant for lilac moles and cute dogs – walk this way.
