Join Doctor Wild on a journey into the Tomb of Dead, the latest offering from Blueprint Gaming. In March 2020, we were introduced to Gorilla Gold Megaways, the first in what would become a series of slots from Blueprint Gaming aptly titled “Power 4 Slots”. The premise of these slots are fairly simple – players have 4 windows active at all times within the base game, essentially spending four times as much money, but with four times as many chances to land a bonus. With the bonus in Gorilla Gold Megaways came the opportunity to land, or gamble for, Super Spins, where all 4 windows can be active within the bonus game too, giving players an inconceivable amount of potential from this bonus.
This has been one of the most hotly debated concepts of 2020. Some players feel as though the requirement to play 4 windows at once is too costly. This only gets worse when the “Super Bet” is factored in (the added cost of one window). Now, players have the opportunity to give Power 4 Slots another chance. Tomb of Dead combines what we have experienced from previous slots in this series, and the book games that players across the globe have come to know and love. Put most simply, this slot combines Book of Dead with Gorilla Gold Megaways. We can’t wait to see what it can do. RTP on this slot sits at 96.48%, and sits at the medium to high end of the volatility scale.
Tomb of Dead’s pay table contains 9 symbols, made up of 5 regular symbols and 4 premium symbols. The pay table of this slot is surprisingly similar to Play’n GO’s Book of Dead, although a switch has been made with John Hunter being replaced by Doctor Wild. Regular symbols on this slot consist of 10, J and Q, which all pay 3.75x bet for 5 of a kind, and K and A, which both pay 6.25x bet, again for 5 of a kind. Premium symbols on this slot are, similarly to Book of Dead, made up of a Phoenix, Anubis, Pharaoh and Doctor Wild. Phoenix and Anubis symbols both pay 37.5x bet for 5 of a kind, and Pharaoh symbols pay 50x bet, again for 5 of a kind.
Landing 5 Doctor Wilds pays a whopping 250x bet, but players should remember these are just the regular 5 of a kind wins. So much more is possible during the bonus on this slot, where chosen symbols expand. Players could land the Doctor Wild symbol as an expanding symbol in all 4 windows, so don’t be put off by the simplistic feel of this slot. Finally, the wild in this slot is the Tomb symbol, which is also the scatter symbol. The scatter symbol also being wild gives players a higher chance of achieving a win during the spin they also land the bonus. 5 wild scatters also pays a huge 250x bet.
Tomb of Dead Base Features
Gameplay within Tomb of Dead features 4 windows, each 5×3 reels in size. Players can choose a stake between 0.10 and 100, however this bet is a “per window” bet. Total bet is this amount multiplied by 4, meaning total stakes on this slot range from 0.40 – 400. According to Blueprint Gaming, Tomb of Dead is featured within the Fortunes of Ra family tree. They also state the game is targeted toward Free Spins players. This game really is all about the bonus. Thankfully, players have a bigger chance than ever to land the Free Spins feature with the opportunity to land 3 scatters in any of the 4 windows.
Unlike Gorilla Gold Megaways Power 4, Tomb of Dead is not a Megaways slot, and is instead similar to two of it’s predecessors in this series; Eye of Horus and Fishing Frenzy. Don’t let the lack of Megaways put you off, though. This slot is full of potential with the expanding symbols in the bonus, and is categorised as Medium Volatility by Blueprint themselves. Landing 3 scatter symbols in view triggers the bonus. Within the bonus, players can win any amount of free spins, with any amount of windows active at once. This is decided by spinning the bonus wheel.
Tomb of Dead Bonus
Before starting the bonus, the bonus wheel spins to award spins and windows. Players can win up to 10 spins, with up to 4 windows active at once. Naturally, players want as many windows active at once as possible, where expanding symbols are active in every window. After spinning the wheel, the expanding symbol is chosen, and can be any symbol available except the wild scatter symbol. The chosen expanding symbol sits at the top of the screen, and is highlighted in gold on every reel.
When enough of the chosen symbol lands in one window, they expand to cover the full reel, and pay on every line. For premium symbols, this is 2 of a kind. For regular symbols ranging from 10-A, 3 of a kind are required to expand. Chosen symbols can land on any position on any reel. More importantly, they do not need to land on the same pay line in order to expand. Landing 3 more wild scatter symbols in any active window retriggers free spins. This awards 5 more free spins and unlocks one more window. Players can unlock a maximum of 4 windows.
One good side of this slot is that it does not require players to stake the additional “Super Bet”. Instead, total bet is 4 times bet per window, rather than 5. The potential lies within this bonus, where players have an opportunity to land their expanding symbol on each reel of all 4 windows. This gives the chance to land some huge wins. Players that love a chase will enjoy hunting for the top symbol during the bonus on this slot for sure.
First Impression
Whilst Tomb of Dead doesn’t necessarily provide us with any new concepts; it combines concepts we have already seen before in a new and interesting way. While the max win of 50,000x may seem far from reach, we’ve seen some huge wins from book games in the past. Similarly, we expect to see some huge wins from this slot. The potential is there to unlock all four windows, and the potential is there to hit retriggers. For this reason, we expect to see serious results.
We have all played “book” games before, and most of us have played a slot within the Power 4 series. Finally, we have certainly played 5×3 reel slots thousands of times before. However, this slot is the first that combines the approach of the Power 4 Slots series with expanding symbols. Often, it just takes a provider to approach a known concept with a small twist to start something new. Blueprint have certainly brought us something new here, even if the components aren’t individually unique. We think this is a great new slot and a great addition to Blueprint Gaming’s portfolio. The fact that it packs a punch with potential is an added bonus.
